  8. Marco Polo (1254-1324?), <I>shown at the far right,</I> was an early European explorer of China. Born in Italy, Polo was 17 years old when he left for China with Italian traders led by his father and uncle. Marco spent a number of years in China and wrote an exciting book about his adventures.
